Crochet basket pattern

I’ve become slightly obsessed with t-shirt yarn recently.  I love the vivid colours, the chunky texture and how quickly it works up.  One of my favourite uses for it is to make sturdy little baskets, perfect for holding craft supplies, small toys or bathroom supplies.

Here’s my pattern for creating your own chunky crochet basket.

You will need:

  • a small bobbin of t-shirt yarn.  I use Boodles (available from Hobbycraft) or Tek Tek (available from Wool Warehouse) although there are other brands out there.  You can even make your own t-shirt yarn with the help of this tutorial from Mollie Makes.
  • a 10mm crochet hook
  • a large yarn needle for weaving in your ends

Pattern:

This basket is worked in the round.  When you get to Round 7 you will start each row with a chain and end with a slip stitch (sl st) to create a nice even top edge and level handles.  To get a neat seam in rounds 7-12, work your first stitch after the ch1 in the same stitch as the sl st from the previous round, then skip the last stitch in the round before closing the circle with a sl st. You will still have the same number of stitches in the round but the finish will be less bumpy.

Round 1: Make a magic circle and work 6 dc into your circle.  Pull circle closed. (6 sts)
Round 2: 2dc in each st.  Work these sts over the tail so that is completely secured. (12 sts)
Round 3: *2dc in first st, 1dc in next stitch.  Repeat from *around (18 sts)
Round 4: *2dc in first st, 1dc in next 2 stitches.  Repeat from *around (24 sts)
Round 5: *2dc in first st, 1dc in next 3 stitches.  Repeat from *around (30 sts)
Round 6: *2dc in first st, 1dc in next 4 stitches.  Repeat from *around.  Sl st to first stitch of the round to close the circle. (36 sts)
Round 7: Ch1, working in backs loop only 1dc in each st around, sl st to first st. (36 sts)
Rounds 8-10: Ch2, 1htr in each st around, sl st to first st. (36 sts, 3 rounds)
Round 11: Ch1, 1dc in next 6 sts, ch7, skip 5 sts, 1dc in next 13 sts, ch7, skip 5 sts, 1dc in next 6 sts, sl st to first st. (36 sts)
Round 12: Ch1, 1dc in each st around, sl st to first st. (36 sts)
Round 13: 1 sl st in each st.  Fasten off and weave in your ends.
